SDHmini-Ex: Fast, Repeatable Trace‑Moisture Measurement for Natural Gas and Process Gas

Accurate trace‑moisture data under challenging operating conditions, such as those found in process and natural gas applications, is reliant on a handheld that responds quickly and performs consistently.

The SDHmini‑Ex is built for that environment: rapid spot checks, stable readings, and straightforward data handling across natural gas and process‑gas applications.

Portable performance, aligned to field work

The SDHmini-Ex delivers ±2 °C (±3.6 °F) accuracy across a practical handheld range of −100 °C to +20 °C (−148 °F to +68 °F) dewpoint. That span covers routine checks at TEG dryer outlets and pipeline compliance work, while giving ample margin for troubleshooting dryer systems. View readouts directly in ppm(v), lb/MMSCF or °F/°C dewpoint, so results align with site practice and reporting requirements.

Desiccant dry‑down: speed to stable readings

Moisture measurements often see slow response or inaccurate readings when the sensor lines or fittings are subject to excess moisture or ingress. This over saturation of the sensor due to contact with ambient air can lead to a “sluggish” response and longer dry-down recovery time.

The integration of the desiccant dry‑down chamber in Shaw portable hygrometers, such as in the SDHmini range, isolates the sensor environment and drives the sensor toward dry conditions rapidly, helping the sensor recover quickly for rapid response to trace amounts of moisture within the sample gas with minimal purge or wait times.

AutoCal: fast verification

The unique feature of Shaw instruments is the AutoCal, or autocalibration feature. Whilst it’s true for compliance and best practice, regular calibration to a known international standard, such as NIST or NPL is essential, but for the majority of applications, it isn’t practical to recalibrate between every use for optimal performance or to safeguard process integrity.

AutoCal is a valuable asset for checking sensor performance at more frequent intervals. If an anomaly in the system is detected, knowing you can quickly perform AutoCal to rule out sensor damage can avoid or minimise a complete operational shutdown.

AutoCal streamlines frequent calibration checks with a controlled, repeatable procedure directly on the instrument. The result is a reliable confirmation of performance, which can be performed by any process engineer or user, providing less disruption—useful during planned maintenance windows and before critical QA activities such as custody‑transfer checks or outage work.
